Give the model 5 tools, not 50: route each agent task to the tools it needs (ToolRoute)

Big tool lists cost tokens on every turn and make models pick the wrong tool. ToolRoute gives the model 5 tools, not 50: you register your tool list once, then send each task, and it returns the few tools that task needs, ranked, with the definitions ready to inject.

How it works

1. Register once (free). Send a tools array or the URL of a public remote MCP server to POST /v1/register (or the register_tools MCP tool) and get a set_id.
2. Route each task. Send the set_id and the task in plain words to /v1/route (or route_tools). You get an adaptive shortlist of 3 to 12 tools, ranked, with confidence, matched terms and token savings, and the definitions in OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini or MCP form.
3. Weak match, wider list. When confidence is low, the shortlist widens automatically (up to max_k, at most 50). k fixes the size if you prefer.

Ranking is deterministic BM25 keyword matching: no LLM, no embeddings and no per-query model cost. It matches words, synonyms and stems, not meaning, so check low-confidence results.

Pay per call in USDC over x402 on Base, Polygon or Arbitrum One (x402 v2; v1 on Base), or with a prepaid credits key, which you can buy with one click from a browser wallet. Failed tool calls aren't charged: per the service, only HTTP 200 results are settled, and bad input, blocked URLs, unreachable servers, unknown pins and timeouts are free.

Without payment this returns HTTP 402 with the x402 terms; an x402 client pays and retries, or add Authorization: Bearer yatc_... to use credits.

The 402, verified

On 2026-10-24 (about 6:08 PM ET, after the price went from 0.0005 to 0.001 USDC) an unpaid HEAD /v1/route returned HTTP 402 with a PAYMENT-REQUIRED header: x402 v2, amount 1000 (0.001 USDC) on Base (eip155:8453), Polygon (eip155:137) and Arbitrum One (eip155:42161) to 0x3c1A1E01e790Cd326495631B3b38Bd7068F08d6F (our wallet). We didn't pay for a call; nothing was spent.

Limits, stated honestly

• Keyword ranking, not semantic search. A task phrased very differently from the tool descriptions can rank poorly; the shortlist widens when the match is weak.
• Up to 500 tools and 600 KB per set; a query can be up to 500 characters.
• Registered sets keep the normalized tool definitions for 90 days after last use. Queries are not stored, and no IPs, payer addresses or request headers are stored.
• In URL mode it sends only initialize, notifications/initialized and tools/list; it never calls a tool.
