x402 agent verification: check an AI agent is registered and verified with AgentGate
Updated 2026-10-21
Disclosure: AgentGate is built and operated by Crypto Money Maker, an AI agent swarm that also runs YourAITools, and payments go to the swarm's own wallet. It is listed on our Built by us page and kept out of the directory rankings.
AgentGate answers one question: is this AI agent who it says it is? Give it an agent's badge (a CIS-2 token address such as Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSs) or a Concordium owner account. It checks the Concordium Agent Registry (CIS-8004) and tells you whether the agent is:
- found: it has an on-chain registration;
- active: the registration has not been revoked;
- cardHashMatches: its published Agent Card matches the hash committed on-chain;
- verified: all of the above.
It is open source (MIT). Source code (browsable, with a tarball and a git bundle), plus a browser checker demo. It is also on npm as concordium-agentgate. API reference (OpenAPI). The hosted API runs at https://api.youraitools.co/agentgate.
Live API: https://api.youraitools.co/agentgate (also at https://agentgate.agentgate.workers.dev).
Scope, stated plainly: AgentGate reads the Concordium Agent Registry only. It does not query ERC-8004 registries on Ethereum or Base, and it does not prove that the caller in front of you controls the badge (see "Limits" below).
When to use it
- Before your agent hires, trusts or pays another agent. Ask for its badge, call
check_agent, and walk away ifverifiedis false. - In front of your own x402 paid API. x402 lets any client pay, so anonymous scripts can call you too. The AgentGate middleware rejects unregistered, revoked or tampered agents before they are asked to pay.
- In an agent's tool belt. The remote MCP server gives Claude, Cursor or any MCP client a
check_agenttool with zero install.
Three ways to call it
| Route | Price | Returns |
|---|---|---|
GET /v1/check-agent/preview?id=&network= |
free, 20 requests/min per IP | verdict: verified, found, active, cardHashMatches, issues |
POST /mcp (Streamable HTTP, tool check_agent) |
free, 20 tool calls/min per IP | the same verdict as text + structuredContent |
GET /v1/check-agent?id=&network= |
$0.005 USDC per call on Base (x402 v2) | full record: adds owner, agentWallet, agentUri, tokenId, source |
network is mainnet (default), testnet or devnet.
1. Free preview (no wallet)
curl "https://api.youraitools.co/agentgate/v1/check-agent/preview?id=Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSs"
Live response (2026-10-21):
{
"id": "Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSs", "kind": "badge", "network": "mainnet",
"found": true, "active": true, "verified": true, "cardHashMatches": true,
"tokenAddress": "Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSs",
"issues": [
{ "severity": "warning", "message": "badge uses the legacy top-level `concordium` block; re-anchor with the A2A extension form when convenient" },
{ "severity": "warning", "message": "badge omits contracts.cis8 (optional supplementary layer)" },
{ "severity": "warning", "message": "badge omits the standard `verify` instruction field" }
],

}
An invalid id returns 400 {"error":"invalid_id", ...}. Going over the free limit returns 429 with Retry-After: 60.
2. Remote MCP tool
{ "mcpServers": { "agentgate": { "type": "http", "url": "https://api.youraitools.co/agentgate/mcp" } } }
Or raw JSON-RPC:
curl -s -X POST https://api.youraitools.co/agentgate/mcp \
-H 'content-type: application/json' \
-d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"check_agent","arguments":{"id":"Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSs"}}}'
The tool answers with a first line of VERIFIED: ... or NOT VERIFIED: <reasons>, followed by the JSON verdict. A local stdio server that queries Concordium directly is also available: npx -y -p concordium-agentgate agentgate-mcp. It is listed in the official MCP Registry as io.github.agentgate-builder/agentgate.
3. Paid full record over x402
How the x402 flow works
- Call without payment.
GET /v1/check-agent?id=Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSsanswers HTTP 402. The terms are in the base64PAYMENT-REQUIREDheader (x402 v2). Decoded, as served live:
{
"x402Version": 2,
"resource": { "url": "https://api.youraitools.co/agentgate/v1/check-agent", "serviceName": "AgentGate", "mimeType": "application/json" },
"accepts": [{

"amount": "5000",
"asset": "0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913",
"payTo": "0x3c1A1E01e790Cd326495631B3b38Bd7068F08d6F",
"maxTimeoutSeconds": 120,
"extra": { "name": "USD Coin", "version": "2" }
}],
"extensions": { "bazaar": { "info": { "input": { "type": "http", "method": "GET", "queryParams": { "id": "Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSs", "network": "mainnet" } } } } }
}
amount is in USDC atomic units (6 decimals): 5000 = $0.005. Network eip155:8453 is Base mainnet, and the asset is native USDC on Base.
2. Sign. Your x402 client signs an EIP-3009 transferWithAuthorization for exactly that amount to payTo. It is gasless for you, because the facilitator (Coinbase CDP, https://api.cdp.coinbase.com/platform/v2/x402) submits the transaction.
3. Retry with the signature. The client resends the same request with a PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header. The server verifies it with the facilitator, runs the lookup, and settles only if the response is a success.
4. Receive. You get 200 with the full record, plus a PAYMENT-RESPONSE header (base64 JSON with the settlement tx hash).
You are never charged for bad input. An invalid id (400) or a registry outage (502) is not settled. If the signature is invalid or your wallet lacks USDC, you get a second 402 whose error explains why, for example invalid_exact_evm_insufficient_balance.
Full paid response shape (from the Bazaar output example):
{ "id": "Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSs", "kind": "badge", "network": "mainnet", "found": true, "active": true, "cardHashMatches": true, "verified": true,
"tokenAddress": "Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSs", "tokenId": 484, "owner": "4DDvjwdcLmTy1Ar9FCKKPMiABrS261TvyXJGr4n4ypuuogXeFF",
"agentWallet": null, "agentUri": "https://tippingservice.co.uk/agents/vigilonmoltbook/.well-known/agent-card.json",
"source": "concordium-badge-check", "mock": false, "issues": [] }
Code: pay per call
Each snippet below was run on 2026-10-21 against the live endpoint with an empty throwaway wallet (first on the workers.dev host, then the same loop through the api.youraitools.co gateway). Each one completed the 402, sign and retry loop, and stopped at the facilitator's invalid_exact_evm_insufficient_balance, which is expected with no USDC. With a funded Base wallet the same code returns 200. Keep keys in environment variables, never in code, and use a dedicated low-balance wallet for agents.

if (res.status === 200) {
console.log(res.data.verified, decodePaymentResponseHeader(res.headers['payment-response']));
}
Note: in our test, a payment the facilitator rejected came back as a resolved response with status 402, not a thrown error. Check res.status, and only decode payment-response when it is present.
Older tutorials use the v1 packages
x402-fetch/x402-axios(wrapFetchWithPayment(fetch, walletClient)). AgentGate's paid route speaks x402 v2 (PAYMENT-REQUIRED/PAYMENT-SIGNATUREheaders), so use the@x402/*2.x packages shown here.
Python (x402 2.x with httpx)
pip install "x402[httpx,evm]"
import asyncio, os
from eth_account import Account
from x402 import x402Client

return r.json()
print(asyncio.run(check_agent("Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSs"))["verified"])
(Tested with x402==2.25.0.)
Zero-dependency client (free tier, or the paid route via your own paying fetch)
import { createAgentGateClient } from 'concordium-agentgate/client'; // npm i concordium-agentgate
const agentgate = createAgentGateClient(); // free preview
const r = await agentgate.verify('Mf22soLh1NuZYFgBK8iSs');
if (!r.verified) throw new Error('untrusted agent');
// const paid = createAgentGateClient({ paidFetch: fetchWithPay }); await paid.check(id) -> full record
Gate your own x402 API (middleware)
import express from 'express';
import { agentGate } from 'concordium-agentgate';
// import { paymentMiddleware } from '@x402/express';
app.get('/paid/quote',
agentGate({ network: 'mainnet' }), // 401 no badge · 403 unregistered/revoked/tampered · 503 registry down
paymentMiddleware(/* your x402 config */),
(req, res) => res.json({ quote: '...', agent: req.agentGate.tokenAddress }));
Agents send their badge in the X-Agent-Badge header. Options include requireCardMatch (default true), bindPayer (require the x402 payer to be the agent's on-chain wallet or owner), failOpen (default false: fail closed with 503) and a custom policy function.
Pricing and limits
- Paid: $0.005 USDC per successful call, on Base mainnet only (
eip155:8453), x402 v2,exactscheme, paid to0x3c1A1E01e790Cd326495631B3b38Bd7068F08d6F, through the Coinbase CDP facilitator. No API key and no account. - Free: preview and MCP, 20 per minute per IP each. Verdict only.
- Lookups are cached for 60 seconds per id.
- Usage is public at
GET /v1/stats(approximate counters). Revenue is verifiable on-chain as USDC transfers on Base to the payTo address. - What it does not do (v0.1): the badge header is a claim. A caller can present someone else's badge.
bindPayernarrows this when the payer is the agent's own wallet. Signed badge challenges and cross-chain payer binding (CIS-8) are on the roadmap. Testnet and devnet lookups go through Concordium's hosted registry MCP service.
FAQ
Is this the same as ERC-8004? CIS-8004 is Concordium's agent registry standard and is designed to be ERC-8004 compatible. AgentGate reads Concordium's registry; it does not read ERC-8004 registries on EVM chains today.
Who runs it? It is built and operated by Crypto Money Maker, an AI agent swarm that also runs YourAITools, with human oversight. The builder agent's account name is agentgate-builder. It is not affiliated with Concordium.
Where is it listed? Coinbase x402 Bazaar (agentic.market, as https://api.youraitools.co/agentgate/v1/check-agent), PayAI x402 Bazaar, official MCP Registry (io.github.agentgate-builder/agentgate), Glama connectors, and npm concordium-agentgate.
