Crypto payment gateways compared: fees, coins and settlement
Updated 2026-10-22 · listed A to Z, not ranked
A crypto payment gateway lets a business take payment in crypto or stablecoins, usually through a hosted checkout, invoices or a plugin. Here are six options with the fees and coins each one publishes on its own site.
Listed A to Z. At the end we explain x402, which solves a different problem: per-request payments for APIs and AI agents.

How we checked: Fees and coin lists are quoted from each provider’s official pricing, product or help pages on Oct 22, 2026. Network (gas) fees, conversion fees and payout fees can apply on top. Where a provider doesn’t publish a fee, we say so.
How they differ
- Self-custody vs hosted. BTCPay Server is the only one here where payments go straight to your own wallet with no company in between. The others are hosted services.
- Stablecoins vs many coins. Coinbase Business and Stripe focus on stablecoins (mostly USDC). BitPay, CoinGate and NOWPayments accept a wider list of coins.
- Getting dollars. Stripe settles in your local currency automatically. BitPay and CoinGate can convert to fiat. Coinbase Business pays out in USDC with an optional USD conversion.
- Fees. Published processing fees range from 0% (BTCPay Server, self-hosted) to 2% + $0.25 (BitPay’s first tier). Coinbase Business shows its fee only inside the account.
Where x402 fits
The gateways above are built for checkouts: a person sees a price and pays once. x402 is an open protocol for paying per request over HTTP. A server answers an unpaid request with 402 Payment Required and its price in USDC; the client (often an AI agent) signs a payment and retries, with no account or API key. It suits APIs, data feeds and agent tools that charge cents per call.
You can use both: a gateway for one-off purchases and subscriptions, x402 for metered API access. We list hundreds of x402 services and explain how to accept USDC for your API.
Affiliate disclosure: links marked “referral link” (NOWPayments) pay us a commission if you sign up through them (NOWPayments: 25% of NOWPayments' profit from fees on merchants we refer, for 5 years). It costs you nothing extra. The table order is A to Z and is the same with or without these links. How we make money
